Deanery Leaders meet with Canon Hayashi
On Saturday, October 29, the Wardens, Treasurers, and other lay leaders and clergy representing ten of the Deanery's fourteen missions and congregations, gathered at the Church of the Holy Spirit for our first official meeting with Scott Hayashi.
During his introductory remarks, Scott stated his intention to visit each Deanery twice a year. In 2006 he hopes to visit before and after General Convention, in order to help us prepare for and then respond to the actions of the national church's triennial meeting.
We then broke into table groups to consider two questions:
1. In what ways do you feel connected with 65 East Huron (the Diocesan Headquarters) and with the Diocese as a whole (including other congregations and the Deanery)?
2. In what ways do you feel disconnected with 65 East Huron (the Diocesan Headquarters) and with the Diocese as a whole (including other congregations and the Deanery)?
In reviewing the reports back from each table, Scott observed that we had by far the shortest list of feeling disconnected of any Deanery, and concluded that we felt a good sense of connection with and within the Diocese.

Deanery Clergy Meet with Bishop Scantlebury
On October 27, 2005, the Waukegan Deanery Clergy met at St. Paul's, McHenry, to discuss a number of questions posed to our Assistant Bishop.
As a result of our conversation, the Dean proposed that anyone with a story of being turned away or ignored when he or she sought to enlist as a volunteer for Diocesan Commissions or Committees should send him an account of it. He will then forward those stories to Bishop Scantlebury as a follow-up.
Concerns about our Diocese's continuing budget situations suggested these possible Resolutions for the Waukegan Deanery to bring to the 2006 Diocesan Convention:
1. To provide sanctions for parishes and missions who do not contribute to the Diocese some minimum amount.
2. To restructure Common Mission guidelines to eliminate or significantly reduce any contributions from Missions or Congregations whose annual budgets fall below a determined "Minimum Survival Income."
3. To urge the Diocesan Council to rethink the Strategic Plan and Budgeting Process to eliminate the chronic difficulty of raising adequate income, and perhaps even to propose a revised Strategic Plan and Budgeting Process for Diocesan Council and Convention consideration.
Gathered Clergy were also reminded to RSVP as soon as possible to Narciso Diaz for his invitation to a December 4, 6:30 PM, Mexican Dinner for clergy and their significant others.
Randall Warren of the Pastoral Care office will be with us for our November 16th meeting at the Church of the Holy Spirit, at the usual time of 12 Noon to 2:00 PM. Lunch will be provided!
